Standalone apps for linux
« on: September 09, 2016, 06:06:03 PM »
I wanted to try the newest version of MuseScore editor and was a bit surprised that it comes in a portable app format as well. It is a single file with a .AppImage extension. It is 71MB big, but it contains everything MuseScore needs to run (including all required QT libraries). Why this can not be a standard? Why can't we have all apps in this format, so everyone could decide what version they want to download and run? I remember that SeaMonkey and Freewrap have been distributed this way for years, so it is possible (and was for ages).

Disk space is cheap and multiple copies of libraries doesn't seem to be an issue any longer. This has been exacerbated to now creating OS containers just to run an app package.  :o
