Windows has wiped out my Linux instalation.

For several months I was enjoying dual boot on my laptop. Unfortunately, after last Windows update my Linux installation has vanished. Also, other strange things happen know. I can not do another dual boot on this machine (it ignores Grub and goes straight to Windows), I can not boot anything from USB and for some time I even couldn't enter BIOS menu(?!). Anyone has experienced anything like that?

I had a similar issue after upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 10. Grub was destroyed and my (logical) Linux partition was deleted. So I always backup my Linux data before installing a bigger Windows update like 1511 or 1607.

Well, I have all the data and making another installation doesn't take more than 20 minutes, but I can't configure boot manager correctly or it's being totally ignored during the boot process (there wasn't problem like that before). I use Windows as much as I use Linux, so removing Windows is not an option, but, in this circumstances, having a dual boot machine isn't one as well. So, it's virtualisation or two separate laptops for two systems. Great...

Another option is to use an external USB HDD (no stick but a real HDD). You can always install Linux on that without any problems and it is booted rather quickly.

No, expert. You are. Disabling updates in some versions of Windows 10 is not possible anymore. Also, I think it's generally a good idea to keep your system updated...

You're not wrong, disabling updates in these days of instability is pretty stupid.

But if you're hell-bent on stopping them, just change your internet connection settings to "metered" and they stop completely until you ask for them.

Ah, ok, it's a laptop? Well, then you are right, that's not so nice using an external HDD. i never did that with my laptop either, only with my desktop PC.
